Repairs & Maintenance

The British Safety Standard BS EN 1176 and the Health & Safety Executive advise that all play areas are inspected annually to meet legal and insurance responsibilities and requirements. These inspections are not just on play equipment but also surfacing and ancillary items throughout the play area. Post installation inspections as well as periodic quarterly inspections are also recommended for school playground equipment.

We also carry out repairs and maintenance for playgrounds and play parks to ensure you meet the standards required. We carry a vast stock of spares to ensure a quick turnaround if a problem arises.

Playground Inspections & Maintenance

At Younger Play we have access to independent RPII inspectors to ensure you're compliant with all safety regulations during a mandatory annual inspection. There are several factors that must be addressed during a play area inspection. From checking how well play equipment is being maintained, to identifying potential trip or fall hazards, we want to be as thorough as possible so that the children's safety is never in question. Here are some of the most common safety hazards that can be found during playground inspections:

  • Unsuitable surfacing - Certain surfacing types can be deemed unsuitable or unsafe compared to options such as rubber surfacing or timber chips.
  • Lack of supervision - Children left unattended may use play equipment improperly which could lead to injury.
  • Age-inappropriate activities - Play equipment is tailored to specific age ranges, meaning some equipment may not be appropriate for a nursery or primary school as they have children of a young age range.
  • Tall platforms with no safety rails - Heightened platforms are a must for a play area with slides, however this means that they must be encased in guardrails, to prevent children falling from a height.
  • Apparent lack of maintenance - A playground that is neglected will be visibly apparent, whether its metallic equipment rusting or timber play areas rotting or splintering.
  • Poor protective surfacing standards - Poor surfacing can lead to play areas and equipment wearing down over time much quicker than expected.

FAQs

  • How often does my playground or play area need to be inspected?

Annual playground inspections are mandatory as per the industry standards set by the British Safety standard and the Health and Safety Executive. However, we also recommend that your play area is inspected on a quarterly basis by a certified playground safety inspector, to ensure that the play area is safe for children to enjoy.

  • Will the timber play equipment last long or need repaired often?

The timber Younger Play uses for playground equipment is Robinia timber. This type of timber is hardwood, and therefore doesn't require any preservatives or treatment, so as long as it's well maintained it should last on its own for many years before needing to be replaced.

  • Can you help repair and upgrade an existing playground or play area?

Of course we can, alongside our sister company Azure Orange, we can repair, maintain, and if necessary upgrade your play equipment, whether it's to adhere to safety guidelines or make for a more enjoyable play space, our expert team can transform your play area into a space of fun, learning, and socialising.

  • How can I keep my play equipment safe at all times?

There are several ways you can ensure your play equipment is safe for use, one is to perform visual inspections on a consistent basis and lookout for loose screws, rust, rot, or sharp edges. Furthermore, teaching the children how to use the playground equipment can prevent any injuries they may sustain.
